There is a risk of conflict between locals and tourists as a result of over tourism. All countries around the world experience this phenomenon. The same is true for Cox’s Bazar. As a result of over tourism, there has been a need to rethink the issue over the past few years. There are a number of negative impacts associated with over tourism, as the word itself implies. Environmental pollution and socioeconomic effects make this an issue.
There’s nothing good about excess. There are three ways over tourism hurts. Here they are: Social, Economical, Environmental
Over tourism, when looked at from a social perspective, is supposed to have a negative impact on Cox’s Bazar’s social life. Locals have a lot of problems with it. According to our observations, over tourism leads to price hikes of essentials in the tourist city. People in the area face many problems as a result. There’s also a big increase in the rent for vehicles in the fish market or the Burmese market. Both tourists and locals should be aware of this. So, Cox’s Bazar itself faces great challenges.
Taking a look at the economic side, the problem is even worse. Dry fish, Burmese goods, dresses, etc., are everywhere in the resort city. There’s a competitive mindset behind these shops. There’s always a tendency for goods to get more expensive. It’s also affecting other local areas where tourists don’t go. A lot of them are kids who sell tea, pickles, horseback riding, etc. It’s the socioeconomic effect of over tourism. Hotel businesses are also affected by over tourism. The number of hotels is growing rapidly to accommodate tourists. In Cox’s Bazar, there are so many hotels, but tourists have a hard time finding places to stay. Tourism season means hotel rooms rent out faster than off-season. There’s an economic imbalance because of this.
We can find its adverse effects on the environment of the resort if we discuss environmental impacts of over tourism.
Environmentalists and zoologists suspect man-made reasons behind the deaths of dolphins and whales. I’ll give you an example by reading a report on dolphin deaths. Here’s how it works:
The dolphin was found dead on the beach around 8:00am on Sunday, with scars on its body, according to locals. The government and newspaper reports say at least 10 whales have washed ashore since 2000. Scientists said these sea creatures could die naturally, but now the ocean is filled with traps to kill them.”
Over tourism pollutes the water and kills sea animals. Whale and dolphin deaths have been on the rise lately. Sea animals die because of humans. Cox’s Bazar tourists throw plastic bags, bottles and many other harmful things in the sea after using them, polluting the water. The result is that sea animals wash up on the shore and if they are not noticed, they eventually pollute the surrounding environment. On the beach today, cows and their dung can be seen, which is very disturbing. The entire beach environment is polluted by cow dung. The scenario has recently been criticized by foreign tourists, which is a shame.
Let’s get to the main point of discussion, which is the social damage caused by over tourism. Cox’s Bazar’s social aspects have been slowly damaged by over tourism. The problem has been going on for years, and it’s gotten worse.
As a result of over tourism, morality problems, culture changes, crimes, gambling, child labor, rape, snatching, theft, sometimes riots happen. There’s also a change in family structure. Over tourism in beach cities causes these social problems. There has been a significant increase in these problems over the past few years.
It is primarily young people who suffer from moral degradation as a result of over tourism. Often, they travel to resort cities where immoral activities such as prostitution and the consumption of alcohol are on the rise. In this country, people who are not permitted to commit such immoral acts in their own cities can easily perform these acts. It’s because there are so many opportunities. Over tourism causes these things. Tourists from both abroad and locally are getting involved in these kinds of immoral acts.
Crime is on the rise because of over tourism. There are a lot of tourists coming to Cox’s Bazar now, luring unemployed and spoiled locals into committing crimes like snatching, theft, rape, etc. There’s been an alarming rise in rapes at the resort. The safety of women tourists has gotten worse in recent years. Despite the security measures the administration takes, they’re not enough to stop crimes. It’s because a lot of people gather in tourism season. Some young guys from local influential families attacked a tourist family a few days back. Women from the tourist family have allegedly been raped. Even though they were arrested right after the incident, they eventually got freed.
Snatchings and thefts are now common in Cox’s Bazar. There are complaints about snatching and theft almost every day, but things don’t get better; rather, crime has gone up alarmingly. Over the past few years, this issue got worse.
Over tourism also leads to child labor. In return for a small amount of money, kids sell tea and pickles on the sea beach and offer horse riding and massages to tourists. Due to over tourism, children and their parents have been lured into participating in immoral acts that distract them from attending school at a young age. The tourist city is dealing with this problem a lot these days.
Family structures change because of over tourism, and sometimes riots break out. These problems arise when the host-guest relationship isn’t maintained. It’s been observed that locals in Cox’s Bazar harass tourists coming from other cities. The problem is caused by a lack of moral knowledge and a lot of tourists.
Due to over tourism, there are also cultural conflicts. This might be because tourists from different cultures dress differently, talk differently, and act differently. Furthermore, tourists are mostly wealthy, causing locals to commit crimes and commit immoral acts.
Therefore, over tourism has a negative impact on the social fabric of Cox’s Bazar. A few measures can prevent problems from becoming worse if they are taken seriously. It is possible for tourists to visit the tourist spot during the off-season, for example. As the authority will be able to have control over the situation, crime will drop automatically in good numbers and crowds will decrease to a great extent. There should also be some restrictions on using alcohol and doing immoral things like prostitution. Tourist cities can have fewer problems if they have proper guidance and law enforcement. To conclude, over tourism needs to stop. It’s only going to get worse, tarnishing the image of Cox’s Bazar, which has the world’s longest sea beach.
